Helping evidence-driven teams tell better stories.

I help nonprofits, small businesses, and other mission-driven teams tell stories that engage audiences, inform visitors, and build energy behind their brand. With a scientific mindset and a creative skill set, I’ll help make complex information clear, credible, and compelling.

Hi, I’m Alex.

My background connects art and science. With a degree in biology from the University of Chicago and professional experience in health economics and medical communications, I bring analytical thinking to every creative project, and vice versa. I can read between the lines of a research report, spot the story in a pile of data, and translate your story into messages that resonate with all kinds of audiences.

Whether it’s introducing the world to your team over social media videos, turning an annual report into a clear print campaign, or inviting your donor base to a fundraiser, I’m ready to move fast and make sure you can put your best foot forward.

Featured Case Study:
Communications Partnership with Root

Client: Root NS, Inc.
Timeline: 2022 – Present
Role: Creative Partner & Communications Contractor

Over three years, I’ve served as Root’s integrated creative partner, handling everything from video production to print design to social media strategy. This ongoing relationship is the best of how I work: diving deep into an organization’s mission, and delivering cohesive communications across channels.

The Challenge:
Root needed to explain their multi-stakeholder impact model to potential partners and donors to better understand how each of the component parts supports their mission.

My approach:

  • Conducted interviews with Root trainees, staff, and community partners
  • Identified the core narrative: how different pieces fit together to create impact
  • Cut interviews into a 5-minute explainer that meets viewers where they were
  • Incorporated simple, clear visuals that reinforced the verbal explanation without overwhelming
  • Handled all production: on-site shoots, voiceover, motion graphics, editing, and final delivery

The Result:
Root premiered this video at their annual gala, Rooted in Community, and now uses it across donor materials and social media. The organization’s model for impact is now demonstrated in a clear, compelling 5-minute story.

Deliverables: Script, interview questions, motion graphics, narration, final video

The Challenge:
Root had powerful program stories and rich footage from the video above, but limited capacity to maintain consistent social media presence – and nobody has the patience for a 5-minute micro-documentary on Instagram. They needed content that could work across platforms while keeping their message coherent and their brand recognizable.

My Approach

  • Developed a social media content strategy aligned with organizational goals
  • Recut the Rooted in Community video into ~60 second clips optimized for Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Created accompanying graphics and wrote post copy that matched their voice

The Result:
The campaign increased donor engagement and gave Root a sustainable content strategy. By repurposing one set of assets across multiple formats, we could maintain momentum without requiring constant new production.

Deliverables: Video series (short format), social media strategy document, graphics library

At left, a training program focused recut of the 2025 Gala video (above), repurposing existing soundbites and b-roll for a year-end fundraising campaign.

At right, a food insecurity program focused recut of the same 2025 Gala video.

The Challenge:
Root needed to transform years of program outcomes and participant data into a compelling year-end fundraising appeal. The challenge was balancing emotional storytelling with the concrete evidence that major donors and funders expect across print, email, and social channels.

My Approach

  • Analyzed impact metrics to identify the most compelling data points for the print narrative
  • Designed print materials that made data scannable and visually engaging
  • Created coordinated social graphics to extend the campaign
  • Ensured all materials elevated the organization’s visual presence while staying true to their brand

The Result:
The annual appeal successfully engaged both individual and institutional donors, with materials that worked equally well in a donor’s mailbox and their inbox.

Deliverables: Print mailers, email templates, social media graphics

The Challenge:
Beyond individual campaigns, Root needed a sustainable approach to visual content. Rather than scrambling for photos each time a newsletter or social post was due, they wanted a ready-to-use library of authentic imagery that could support ongoing communications needs throughout the year.

My Approach:
I developed a strategic media library system that reduces production time while increasing content quality:

  • Conducted focused shooting days to capture diverse program moments, staff, volunteers, and environments
  • Organized footage and photography into a categorized, accessible online library
  • Built a collection that covers multiple seasons, programs, and storytelling needs
  • Enabled the team to pull assets on-demand for social media, grant applications, annual reports, and fundraising materials

The Result:
Root now has a professional media library they can draw from year-round, dramatically reducing turnaround time for communications projects and eliminating the need for frequent photo shoots. When they need fresh content, we schedule strategic shooting days rather than starting from scratch each time.

Deliverables: Organized media library (photography and video), ongoing content capture, asset management
